Program
Since his accident Dick is helped in basketing pigeons, administration and many more statute-labour by Rini Riemens. “Without Rini I would have not be able to list these performances. Together we can give the pigeons more attention, but we see more too,” says Dick. Very often this appears with nominated pigeons.
During the week Rini spends many hours analysing the result-list and preceding performances of the pigeons, to serve Dick with good advices about what pigeons to nominate. Dick than checks the lines, the condition of the pigeon and he than decides if this pigeon indeed is capable of doing the job. “You must dare to trust a pigeon and you can only do that when you nore about the capacities of the parents and the relatives of the pigeons.”
Oxygen, regularity and relaxing
As primary conditions for pigeons it is important to pay attention to the following aspects:
- First; make sure your loft is dry and airy.
- Feed a basic mixture that can be given to your pigeons 365 days per year.
- Ensure regularity when you want top condition on your lofts and do not make things too complicated for yourself.
Care for old pigeons
With old birds, we follow the following schedule:
- Around January 10th the pigeons are paired.
- The racers nurse one round of youngsters and the breeders are separated after 3 rounds of youngsters.
- During the breeding season, supply extra soy beans (rich of protein) and as extra give your pigeons a mixture of grind, peanuts, planed cheese and minerals.
- After nursing the youngsters, add some dari to the racing mixture, so the pigeons keep a good weight. Train your pigeons a few times per week to temper the condition.
- Give your youngsters, racers and breeders their first canker cure about three weeks before the start of the racing season.
- The pigeons are fed a basic mixture that is rich of carbo hydrates on regular times. Dick believes that mixtures with more peas make the pigeons train like crazy in the week, but forget to win prizes in the weekend.
- 3 weeks before the first middle distance races, the pigeons are trained in the morning and the evening to create regularity and condition.
- Before basketing, show no hens to the widowhood cocks and leave the breeding dish in the loft the entire week. As the season goes on, Dick sometimes shows some hens before basketing. Experience learned that showing hens has no influence on the results. “I used to make a big issue from pigeons making out, but now I don’t believe in it anymore,” says Dick.
- After basketing the loft is cleaned with a vacuum-cleaner and the widowhood hens are let in after half an hour and they are fed well.
- When they arrive home, there are electrolytes in the drinking water and the cocks are shown their hens. How long depends on the toughness of the race (sometimes until the next morning).
- Middle distance pigeons are entered every week and one day long distance pigeons every 14 days. However, they are trained very well in advance.
- To make sure the pigeons run short of nothing, they get fresh grind and pickstone on a daily base and once per week extra minerals are supplied over the food.
